Position Summary:

The System Director of CDI Coding directs the administrative duties related to the daily operations and functions of coding and clinical documentation for the health system. The System Director provides services, advice and expertise related to regulatory matters and ensures compliance for coded and abstracted data, conducts ongoing coding and documentation reviews, and coordinates coding review activities with HIM, Compliance Department, Performance Improvement committees and external coding review companies.

Essential Functions:

The System Director of CDI Coding responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

* Develops and manages the strategic plan for coding and clinical documentation

* Ensures proper fiscal management and develops annual budget for coding and clinical documentation

* Monitors quality of data in several automated data capture systems and provides statistical reports

* Conducts review of medical records to ensure accurate and complete coding in accordance with Federal Regulations

* Designs and conducts education and training for coders, case managers, CDI specialists, physicians and other employees regarding regulatory compliance matters related to coding, documentation and billing

* Evaluates needs and activities for contract coding services

* Initiates corrective action to ensure resolution of problem areas identified during internal or external auditing for coding and documentation compliance

* Coordinates maintenance and testing of coding and financial software applications/interfaces with IT System analyst

* Initiates and maintains policies, practices and procedures consistent with professional standards and legal requirements and regulatory agencies

* Ensures department staff are managed effectively, including hiring, scheduling, training, evaluating performance and competency and conducting disciplinary/counseling sessions as needed

* Develops and directs the clinical documentation improvement program for the system

* Works in partnership with physicians, clinical specialists, and coding staff to ensure medical records accurately reflect patient acuity for quality reporting and MS-DRG assignment

* Maintains extensive knowledge and experience pertaining to regulatory compliance, coding, and billing to Federal healthcare programs.

* Develops documentation query protocol and educates physicians and professional staff on processes

* Monitors and identifies trends in provider documentation and associated coding issues. Develops and implements action plans as needed.


Reports to the Administrative Director of Health Information Management

Environmental Conditions:

Heavy work volume, high degree of accuracy required; stringent deadlines, frequent interruptions, and exposure to the angry/hostile customers. May be required to work extended hours, on off shifts and weekends/holidays related to deadlines and needs of Metro departments. Requires on call support, may require return to work during all hours to resolve problems. Exposure to serious error is present: data integrity, health information, security and/or confidentiality. Travel required to Metro facilities and may involve occasional air travel. Exposure to weather conditions during travel. Hazards are minimal if safety precautions are utilized.

* Bachelors degree or RHIA and 3 years' experience in an acute care hospital coding setting; or RN/RHIT and 4 years' experience in an acute care hospital coding setting

* CCS Certification preferred

* MBA, MSM or MHA preferred

* Coding experience must include ICD10 acute care

* Previous management work experience in a moderate to large size health facility and computer literacy of encoder applications and medical record hospital information system applications

* Must be able to communicate effectively in English (Verbal/Written)

* This job requires the incumbents to operate a INTEGRIS-owned vehicle OR personal vehicle (non INTEGRIS-owned) and therefore must have a current Drivers License as well as a driving record which is acceptable to our insurance carrier
