Position Summary:

Responsible for transporting patients to and from designated areas. Responsible for assisting with continuity of patient care processes and coordination with support departments within the hospital. Performs a variety of routine duties assisting both patients and departments. This position requires age related competencies. Adheres to National Patient Safety Goals as appropriate based on the level of patient contact this position requires.

Essential Functions:

* Transports patients to various areas within the hospital. Anticipates potential problems and in coordination with patient care staff determines the most appropriate mode of transportation so that the activity can be completed in a timely manner while providing total safety for the patients. This includes transporting those patients with equipment such as IV's with and without IV pumps, chest tubes, urinary catheters/drainage bags, etc.

* Observes patients while being transported and responds to any evidence of patient difficulty and initiates proper action such as CPR, notification of appropriate personnel, etc. Assists with call light notification.

* Properly identifies all patients before beginning transport.

* Prepares, cleans and stores transport, oxygen and other related equipment and supplies.

* Follows proper procedures for transportation of oxygen equipment whether it be E cylinders with the corresponding holders or the liquid oxygen strollers.

* Picks up and delivers specimens, labs and documents.

* Delivers supplies and materials from central warehouse throughout the facility, provides par level support for warehouse and stocks linen.

* Delivers and returns equipment for maintenance and repairs.

* Performs general housekeeping and straightening in public waiting areas including sweeping floors, cleaning up waiting areas, empting trash and other activities.

* Performs routine clerical or administrative support duties, i.e. scanning, filling, answer phone etc.

* Acts as a patient sitter providing direct observation of a patient who may be considered to have been or to be a danger to themselves or to provide comfort and communication.

* Carries hospital radio or phone at all times to ensure quick response to designated task or assignment.

SMC and Deaconess Surgery Only:

* Cleans OR rooms in preparation for the next procedure.

* Responsible for cleaning hand scrub stations, dressing rooms, lounge, all OR corridors, specimen room, equipment room, and supply room.


Reports to designated Department Manager or House Supervisor. No supervision of others.

Required Physical Demands (Subject to Reasonable Accommodation):

Keyboarding/Dexterity: Occasionally; activity exists up to 1/3 of the time
Standing/Walking: Frequently; activity exists from 1/3 to 2/3 of the time
Strength (Lift/Carry/Push/Pull): Heavy (Exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects)
Talking (Must be able to effectively communicate verbally): Yes

Hearing: Yes
Color Acuity (Must be able to distinguish and identify colors): Yes

Environmental Conditions:

Hazards are minimal if safety precautions are utilized.
Occasional exposure to odor. Potential exposure to blood and body fluids, and cleaning agents. May be required to wear universal protective clothing.

* Requires a high school diploma or the equivalent with the ability to read and write the English language as well as the ability to comprehend alphabetical and numerical filing systems. Must be able to communicate with others in English.

* Requires CPR Certification within 30 days of hire

* Requires knowledge of medical terminology.

* Previous healthcare related experience preferred.

* Requires physical ability to move patients and equipment with relative ease.
