Orthopedic Technician

Position Summary:

Under general supervision, applies, and removes various types of casts, splints, and traction according to physician's instructions for treatment. Fabricates special braces and casts from molds. Maintains administrative and patient records. This position requires age related competencies.
Adheres to National Patient Safety Goals as appropriate based on the level of patient contact this position requires.

Essential Functions:

The Orthopedic Technician responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

* Applies and removes various types of casts, splints and traction material with physicians' orders.

* Discusses and understands the types of injury and the necessary treatment with the physician.

* Following the physician's prescription:

* Covers the injured area with protective material and wraps it to immobilize it.

* Applies simple casts or splints based on the injury and the prescribed treatment. Molds casts according to type of treatment prescribed. Cuts windows in casts.

* Trims, remodels, and removes casts/splints using electric tools, cast cutters, scissors, and cast spreaders.

* Instructs patients and family members in correct use and purpose of cast or splint, traction, and other support devices.

* Observes patients and reports change in patient's condition and/or other factors which are related to patient care.

* Changes wound dressings, removes staples and stitches using correct infection control measures.

* Maintains administrative and patient records and assists with patient care.

* Monitors and orders supplies and equipment including cast and splint materials, braces, and dressings. Maintain appropriate par levels. Prepare requisitions.

* Cleans and stores equipment/tools, including cast saw, plaster trap, and other related items

* Completes in service education programs and provides in service as requested.

* Documents patient care by recording equipment/cast application in chart.

* Transfer patients from room to room.

Reports to assigned Manager, Supervisor, or Director

Required Physical Demands (Subject to Reasonable Accommodation):

Keyboarding/Dexterity: Occasionally; activity exists up to 1/3 of the time
Standing/Walking: Constantly; activity exits up to 2/3 of the time
Strength (Lift/Carry/Push/Pull): Medium (Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, or 10 to 25 pounds of force constantly to move objects)
Talking (Must be able to effectively communicate verbally): Yes
Seeing: Yes
Hearing: Yes
Color Acuity (Must be able to distinguish and identify colors): No

Environmental Conditions:

Some exposure to infectious diseases when handling open wound dressings and drilling screws into patient bones. Occasional risk for back injury.

Qualifications:


* Graduation from a qualified accredited Orthopedic Technologist training program as recognized by the US Department of Education or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation
OR equivalent military program
OR 2 years of experience in orthopedic technology under the supervision of a license physician specializing in the musculoskeletal system AND current OTC Certification through NBCOT
OR A minimum of 3 years of related work experience under the supervision of a license physician specializing the musculoskeletal system may be substituted in lieu of OTC certification

* Certification or Registration through ASOP (American Society of Orthopedic Professional) or NAOT ( National Association of Orthopedic Technicians) preferred

* Must be able to communicate effectively in English (verbal/written)
